Castaway / Forgotten Friends DOG TRAINING PROGRAMS
Since May of 2015 we have implemented two dog training programs to make our adoptable dogs more desirable to potential adopters (more information on each program is below). Each dog that has completed either of the programs will carry an adoption fee of $100 which includes at minimum; rabies vaccination, spay/neuter, heart worm direct test, microchip, responds to name, leash training, crate training, house training and know one or more basic commands. For more information on program dogs and/or questions please contact the program director, Amber R. Adams, either by phone (478.552.2756) or email (sandersvilleac@gmail.com).
At time of adoption, animal will be given a microchip that is registered to the new owners and well as all animals records.
All of our dogs are not able to go through a program (due to space availability within each program) so some will remain at the shelter until adoption, rescue, or another spot in a program opens up- during this time, the adoption fee is $15 and adopter will sign an agreement to have the dog either spay/neutered and a rabies vaccination.
*Rescue groups can still pull program animals after training period however, the adoption fee will not be waived for any dog that has completed either program. Licensed rescue groups can pull any dogs at the shelter (not in program) and fee will be waived although and adoption agreement will still have to be signed.
Castaway Dog Training Program (est. May 2015)
We have teamed up with Broken Shackle Ranch in Davisboro, GA for our Castaway Program. Chosen guys are assigned a dog for the entirety of the program, 8 weeks, each dog that “graduates” from Castaway will (unless stated otherwise) be named, spay/neutered, UTD on rabies vaccination, know and respond to their name, be leash trained, be crate/house trained, know basic commands such as sit, lie down, stay, come, roll over, speak, shake, and play fetch, overcome food/toy aggression (if any was exhibited), and be on a feeding/potty schedule.Dogs can be adopted prior to the program ending however the dog will not be released until the program ends. Potential adopters can also set up a time to meet the dogs and be updated on their progress if they wish to adopt.
Castaway Mission
Our mission is to provide a second chance at adoption for dogs selected for the program by providing basic training and education for both resident (trainer) within the assisted living facility and dog, resulting in permanent homes after program completion. Trainer will also gain skills in basic animal care and training as well as valuable life/character traits- dedication, determination, patience, loyalty, ambition, confidence, responsibility, compassion, and being efficient- proving it does pay to be a hard worker.
Castaway Goal
All of the dogs selected for the program will go through a basic 8 week training program and live with their trainer for the entirety of the program. Our ultimate goal is for these dogs to come out of the program with the following- UTD on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, leash trained, house/crate trained, respond to basic commands (sit, fetch, and stay), among other desirable qualities- resulting in dogs being adopted into their forever home.
Forgotten Friends Dog Training Program (est. October 2015)
Amber was approached by a couple, Otter and Trieste Coultas, that has an extensive past with animals about starting a home based training program for our dogs similar to our Castaway- prior to their proposal of another program, they helped us out by offering their time with our Castaway Program. Otter and Trieste both have a deep love for animals and a heart bigger than most. Otter has a military background and Trieste is the manager and an O.R. Tech for a low cost animal clinic, CSRA Life Saver. Forgotten Friends will help expand the potential adoption base by helping to expose the program’s animals to a larger community population. Dog can be adopted after four weeks in the program and be released to the new owners then; as trainers, The Coultas’, see fit- some may require longer but no more than eight weeks.
Forgotten Friends Mission
Our mission is to provide a four to eight week program in an environment similar to that which the pets chosen will encounter in their permanent home. Forgotten Friends will allow greater socialization through human and animal interaction. While in the program, pets will have more personalized supervision and greater access to veterinary care; through our partnership with CSRA Lifesaver.
Forgotten Friends Goal
Our goal is to free up shelter space while increasing the adoptability of pets chosen through greater socialization, personalized handling, and home environment training; including but not limited to- responding to name, leash training, crate training, house training, and basic command to sit. The health and well being of the pets will be the responsibility of Forgotten Friends.
